One man, two families

One may notice in yesterday's post of the Jonathan Boyd family group, that Nancy married the son of Simeon Hunt and Polly Samples, Simeon Jackson Samples...wait a minute..."Samples?" That's right, Simeon Hunt and Polly were not married when Simeon was born, at least not by law.

Furthermore, one may notice that Nancy's sister, Celia, married another son of Simeon Hunt...and Delilah Samples Hunt (Polly's sister). His name was James Basil Hunt. His parents were legally married.

For many years, Polly Samples lived next to her sister and her husband, Simeon Hunt, raising children with him/them. That's right! Must've been quite the scandal in those days. Apparently, Delilah supported this "activity," or I'm sure she would have run Polly off. You can find further evidence in their father's will that both ladies were in agreement for this unique lifestyle. Their father, William Samples, mentioned in his will that both Delilah and Polly had "disobliged" him "so much" that he did not think he would give them any more than he already had. After Delilah's death, their mother, Nancy Wilson Samples, in her will, gave much to Polly citing William's withholding as justification for her generosity.

Also, after Delilah's death, Simeon and Polly traveled all the way to Utah to have their marriage blessed by the Mormon Church. They did return, and lived out the rest of their lives in Russell County, Virginia. At some point, not sure whether it was before or after they went to Utah, they were charged with "lewdness" according to the Russell County court records. This was in reference to the timing of their marriage, apparently, because once they proved they had not married until after Delilah's death, the case was dismissed.

Simeon Hunt was a captain of the Russell County infantry during the Civil War. He was a blacksmith and a farmer, a very tall and respected man in the community.

About the time Nancy Boyd and her husband Simeon Jackson Samples moved to Estill Co., KY, Simeon changed his name to Andrew Jackson Samples.

Joseph Boyd of Patrick County and Russell County, VA

Joseph is my brick wall for the Boyds. We do not know for sure if he was the son of Joseph of Bucks County, Pennsylvania. It's our best guess, for now at least. And, I have a fair amount of confidence in this guess. Here's the family lineup.

Joseph Boyd and Nancy Aaron

U2 Joseph Boyd b. abt 1770-1780* (Bedford Co. or Franklin Co, VA**), (son of, we THINK, Joseph Boyd of Bucks Co., PA /Patrick Co., VA, and ?? [nee ?? ] Boyd), d. abt 1852 (Russell Co., VA), buried, probably in New Garden, Russell Co., VA, m abt 1800 (probably Franklin County), Nancy (probably Aaron***, though no proof exists so far), dau of , we THINK, William and Elizabeth (nee ? ) Aaron, b. / /1774 in Albemarle Co., VA, d. aft 20 Aug 1870, at least age 96, in Honaker, Russell Co., VA, buried, probably in Honaker, Russell Co., VA.

*It is held by some that Joseph was born abt 1769-1770, and the 1850 Russell Co. census supports this. HOWEVER, the two previous censuses in Patrick Co. and Russell Co. do not. They consistently put Joseph in an age category that would show he was born 1780-1790. Since Jonathan was born in 1801, it is more likely that it was not later than 1780.

** Franklin County was formed from Bedford County in 1785. It is unlikely that Joseph was born as late as 1785, since he would have been only 16 years of age at Jonathan’s birth in 1801. So we BELIEVE his birthplace was Bedford Co. although he reports Franklin Co. to the 1850 census-taker.

*** Aaron is the maiden name for Nancy which has been passed down through several different (and distant) branches of this family. For now, that information provides us a lead in our continuing search for proof.

Joseph and Nancy Aaron Boyd lived in Patrick Co., VA (until at least 1830) and New Garden, Russell Co., VA (as of the 1840 census, although some documents of land transactions in Patrick Co. indicate Joseph and family might have left there in 1830), and had issue:

V1 Jonathan A. Boyd, b. 8 Sep 1801 (Patrick Co., VA), d. 18 Apr 1892 (Honaker, Russell Co., VA), buried Jonathan Boyd Cemetery (Honaker), m. 18 Sep 1828 (Patrick Co., VA), Mary Polly Burnett, dau of John and Nancy (nee Pendleton) Burnett, b. 12 Apr 1813 (Patrick Co., VA), d. 24 May 1896 (Honaker, Russell Co., VA), buried in Jonathan Boyd Cemetery.

V2 Elizabeth Boyd, b. abt 1804 (Patrick Co., VA), d. aft 1880 (Menifee Co., KY), buried, probably in Menifee, m. bef 1831 (Russell Co., VA), Henry Peck, son of George and Catherine (nee Wysor) Peck, b abt 1801 (Montgomery Co., VA), d abt 1860 (Russell Co., VA), buried probably Russell Co.

V3 Nancy Boyd, b. abt 1806 (Patrick Co., VA), d bef 1880 (Russell Co., VA), buried probably Russell Co., VA, m abt 1829-30 (possibly in Russell Co., VA) Abraham Reynolds, son of Henry and Ann (nee Ward) Reynolds, b. 1798 (Maryland), d. abt 1860 (Russell Co., VA), buried, probably in Russell Co., VA.

V4 Robert Boyd, b. abt 1810 (Patrick Co., VA), d 1870-1880 Powell Co., KY, buried probably Powell Co., m bef 1835 (Russell Co., VA) Nancy MNU , b 1815 (Wythe Co., VA), d 1870-1880 (Powell Co., KY), buried probably Powell Co.
